From Rules to Discovery: A Father’s Educational Awakening
Have you ever wondered if your approach to your child’s education might be holding them back? I did. And that question changed everything.
The Journey from Control to Connection
I used to believe that academic excellence came from rigid structure and unwavering discipline. As a father determined to see his children succeed, I pushed my oldest son relentlessly toward academic perfection. The result? A growing wall between us and mounting challenges at school. Despite his natural intelligence and grace, our relationship strained under the weight of my expectations.
This wasn’t the educational journey I had dreamed of. But to understand how I got there – and more importantly, how I changed – we need to go back to where it all began.
Today, as the founder of Amerifusion and Amerifusion Consulting, I combine my passion for technology and finance to help businesses thrive in the digital age. But what truly drives me is showing fellow immigrants and professionals that with the right guidance and mindset, they can chart their own path to success. When I’m not working with clients or developing new business strategies, you’ll find me spending quality time with my family, who remind me daily why I chose this entrepreneurial journey.
I believe that success isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about lifting others as you climb. Whether I’m mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs or helping established businesses adapt to changing markets, my goal remains the same: to create lasting impact that extends beyond balance sheets and bottom lines.
Lessons from Sierra Leone: The Making of an Educational Philosophy
Picture a young boy in rural Sierra Leone, absorbing a pivotal message that would shape his learning journey: “Memorization is for people who aren’t intelligent.” Those words from an older relative sent me down a path of rejecting memory work in favor of conceptual understanding. It wasn’t until university, watching a top student excel through both memorization and comprehension, that I began questioning this limiting belief.
My own educational path was anything but traditional:
- Ages 0-4: Living with my mother
- Ages 4-8: Split time between mother and stepmother
- Ages 8-15: Raised by my grandmother
- Ages 15-20: Living with a distant relative who initially saw me as just another potential dropout
Each transition taught me resilience, but also embedded a rigid view of success that I would later need to unlearn.
The Awakening: When Children Become Teachers
Everything changed when I started really watching my children:
- Jelani, my language explorer, who finds joy in mastering counting systems across cultures, from Arabic to Kazakh
- Jayson, the strategist, who reveals his brilliance through complex game mechanics rather than traditional academics
- My oldest son, whose different way of learning taught me my most valuable lesson about education
This wasn’t just about different learning styles – it was about different ways of being brilliant. Each child showed me that intelligence isn’t a single path, but a constellation of possibilities.

Today, my educational philosophy combines:
- Strong foundational skills in reading, mathematics, science, and physics
- Development of multiple intelligences through global exposure
- Practical application over pure memorization
- Cultural immersion as a learning accelerator
